As a research assistant at Active Living By Design, Charla Hodges assisted staff by collecting and analyzing data, writing reports, and disseminating findings. Charla earned her Master’s Degrees in Public Health and City and Regional Planning, with concentrations in Health Behavior and Economic Development from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Prior to returning to graduate school, Charla attended East Carolina University where she obtained a B.S. in Health Education and Promotion with a focus on Community Health.
Charla’s first experience with healthy eating came from her family through her grandfather’s garden and growing up on a farm. For her, growing her own food was a great way of learning the origins and importance of healthy eating. In 2013, Charla served as a graduate intern at The Food Trust in Philadelphia, PA, working on the National Campaign Team for Healthy Food Access as an evaluator and newsletter writer. Her interests are improving access to and availability of healthy foods for communities and encouraging community engagement in planning processes. She hopes to continue working in the healthy eating arena following graduation.
